The Idlib Liberation Front was an alliance of several Idlib-based Free Syrian Army groups. Formed in January 2016, it was essentially a reformation of the northern branch of the Syria Revolutionaries Front, which had been defeated and disbanded by the al-Nusra Front in late 2014. Jamal Maarouf's SRF had a reputation for corruption, and many Idlibis welcomed the group's defeat. However, as al-Nusra became increasingly authoritarian, sympathy for the jihadist group waned. Some former SRF fighters took the opportunity to reform their brigades under a new front dedicated to protecting the populace and undermining al-Nusra. Maarouf was notably absent.

Though the Idlib Liberation Front was careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past, it never quite achieved the old SRF's level of influence. Nevertheless, by the end of the war it was considered the second-largest faction in Idlib after the 5th Corps.

There were seven constituent brigades:
