Part of: Euphrates Brigades

Liwa Ahrar al-Raqqa was a Free Syrian Army unit active in Aleppo and Raqqa. It was established in February 2016 as a split from the Jihad in the Path of God Brigade. The latter group had worked with the YPG for some time, but it still retained loose links to the National Coalition and other opposition groups in exile. Liwa Ahrar al-Raqqa wanted to form closer links with the YPG and the Syrian Democratic Council. It also adopted an explicitly secular platform. Despite the split, the two brigades maintained friendly relations and both participated in the liberation of Raqqa governorate from the Islamic State.
