The Jihad in the Path of God Brigade was a Free Syrian Army unit originating in Raqqa governorate. It was formed in late 2012 as a subunit of Liwa Thuwar al-Raqqa. Though it became independent in early 2013, it retained close relations with Thuwar al-Raqqa. The Jihad in the Path of God Brigade was one of the few rebel groups to explicitly acknowledge links with the Syrian National Council and National Coalition, though the exiled opposition organizations had little influence on it. ISIS pushed the brigade out of Raqqa in 2014, after which it fled to YPG-controlled territory in northeastern Aleppo. It joined the joint FSA-YPG Euphrates Volcano operations room soon after its creation and helped to push the Islamic State out of Aleppo and later Raqqa. The brigade also played a role in bringing the mainstream opposition together with the PYD/YPG and its allies towards the end of the war.
