The Lions of the Euphrates Movement was a Free Syrian Army unit based in the Kobanî countryside. It was formed in the aftermath of the Islamic State's siege of Kobanî, which was successfully broken by the People's Protection Units and its FSA and American allies in January 2015. As the Euphrates Volcano operations room reversed IS' momentum, the Lions of the Euphrates Movement formed to help liberate the wider Kobanî Canton. It worked closely with the Knights of the Euphrates Brigade to push IS out of the canton. For the rest of the war, the Movement played a mainly defensive role, repelling incursions by jihadists.
