Liwa Sham al-Rasul was a Free Syrian Army unit based primarily on the outskirts of Damascus. It was formed in April 2013 as a reorganization of an earlier group called Quwat Maghawhir al-Sham. Ideologically, it was Sufi-influenced and close to the Muslim Brotherhood. It cooperated with many other factions in the area but had a poor relationship with both the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State. In March 2015, after al-Nusra fired on a crowd of civilians that were protesting Nusra's alleged corruption, clashes began between Nusra and Liwa Sham al-Rasul, which resulted in Nusra's eviction from several southern Damascus towns. The next month, Nusra facilitated IS' invasion of the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp and tried to halt other rebels (including Liwa Sham al-Rasul) from entering Yarmouk to defend its beleaguered population. This resulted in lasting enmity between Nusra and almost all of the other rebel factions in the Damascus area, and when Nusra (by then known as the Islamic Emirate of Syria) was chased out of that area in DATE TBD, Liwa Sham al-Rasul played a key role.
