Jaysh Usoud al-Sharqiya was a Free Syrian Army unit based primarily in the eastern Qalamoun area of Rif Dimashq governorate. It was formed in late 2014 through the merger of several rebel groups who had been chased out of Deir ez-Zor governorate by the Islamic State. The most prominent group involved was Liwa Bashair al-Nasr, an affiliate of the Authenticity and Development Front; the new formation was also affiliated with the ADF, and Bashair al-Nasr's leader Tlass al-Salama (nom de guerre Abu Faisal) was appointed general commander. It remained part of the ADF for a year before becoming an independent FSA brigade at the end of 2015. The group's primary purpose was to defeat IS, and to that end it worked closely with the Forces of the Martyr Ahmad al-Abdo and other groups in the eastern Qalamoun. After successfully repelling offenses from IS (later the Islamic Emirate of the Levant) and the Assad government, in 2017 Jaysh Usoud al-Sharqiya pushed into Deir ez-Zor as well as the largely desert areas of southern Homs and eastern As-Suweida governorates.
