The Brigade of the Chargers was a Free Syrian Army unit based in Latakia, occasionally active across the border in Idlib. It was formed in late 2013 as a member of the Ahfad al-Rasul Brigades. It left Ahfad al-Rasul in January 2014 and soon afterward became one of the first groups to receive TOW missiles from the CIA. Later in the year it absorbed several smaller groups and by 2015 it was the largest non-jihadi group in Latakia. The brigade often experienced tensions with al-Nusra and other hardline Islamists, eventually engaging in open war with the jihadis after the formation of the Islamic Emirate of the Levant. The rebels' position in Latakia was precarious as it was, and the infighting meant that little progress was made against the Assad regime on that front. Despite continued pressure from government forces, the Brigade of the Chargers and its fellow brigades in the United Latakia Liberation Council managed to chase Nusra and its allies out of the governorate by DATE TBD. In the process they defended several non-Sunni communities from the jihadi's attacks, sometimes even coordinating with locals in regime-held towns. This experience allowed the Brigade of the Chargers to play a prominent role in reconciliation during and after the peace negotiations.
