The Syrian Liberation Brigade was a Free Syrian Army unit based in and around Aleppo city. It was founded in January 2013 and battled the Syrian government in several neighborhoods. The group was most notable for its actions during the fighting in Sheikh Maqsood, a Kurdish-majority neighborhood in the northern part of the city. The People's Protection Units had a presence there and at times broke their general policy of neutrality to fight the government alongside the rebels. But most rebel groups in the area wanted to assert full control over the neighborhood and would not accept the YPG's presence. The Syrian Liberation Brigade stood out in refusing to fight the YPG and tried to keep the peace. Several truces were signed, but they all failed, and eventually the YPG pushed anti-Kurdish rebel groups out of Sheikh Maqsood. The Syrian Liberation Brigade withdrew from the neighborhood voluntarily, and by mid-2014 it had withdrawn from Aleppo city altogether, claiming that the dominant rebel groups were abusing their authority and refusing to listen to civilian activists. The group joined the Dawn of Freedom Brigades and fought the Islamic State as part of the Euphrates Volcano operations room. When al-Nusra declared its Islamic Emirate of the Levant, the Syrian Liberation Brigade became one of several groups serving as bridges uniting the mainstream, traditionally anti-YPG rebels and the YPG and its allies against the jihadis.
