The National Liberation Movement was a Free Syrian Army group based mainly in the al-Rastan and Talbiseh areas of northwestern Homs governorate. It was formed in early 2012 by defecting military officers. The group was one of the original members of the Syrian Islamic Liberation Front, but had left by mid-2013. Its name was changed to "Homs Liberation Movment" in 2014 and then reverted back in 2016. Compared to most other rebel factions in Homs, the National Liberation Movement had a higher proportion of ex-military officers (as opposed to ex-civilians) and attempted to combat the lawlessness and sectarianism that characterized much of the fighting in Homs and its suburbs, but it did not always succeed. Nevertheless, it did help to keep the al-Nusra Front/Islamic Emirate of the Levant out of the rebel pocket in al-Rastan, which held out against the Assad government until the end of the war.
