Liwa Ahfad Othman was a small Free Syrian Army unit based in the Houla region of northern Homs governorate; it also operated across the border in Hama governorate. Formed in late 2014, the group consisted of a mixture of Arabs and Turkmen; the latter make up the majority of the Houla region's inhabitants. Working closely with the nearby 313th Brigade, Liwa Ahfad Othman fought to defend Houla against both the Assad regime and jihadists like the Islamic Emirate. Despite the loss of most of Homs governorate to the government by the end of the war, Houla remained in rebel hands.
