Jaysh Tahrir al-Sharqiya was a Free Syrian Army unit active in Deir ez-Zor governorate. Formed secretly in August 2015, it was mostly made up of Shaitat tribe members, who had witnessed a horrific massacre at the hands of the Islamic State the year prior. The group operated underground, focusing on assassinations and sabotage, working with the similarly-purposed White Shroud and Ghosts of the Desert where possible. It remained active when the Islamic Emirate replaced the Islamic State. As FSA forces pushed into Deir ez-Zor in DATE TBD, Jaysh Tahrir al-Sharqiya rose up and contributed to the rapid collapse of the belleagured Emirate in the Shaitat lands. It then joined the Euphrates Islamic Liberation Front to help secure the rest of the governorate.
