The Descendants of the Messenger Brigade was a Free Syrian Army unit operating in Aleppo. It was founded in December 2013 by Nizar "Abu Laith" al-Khatib, an officer in the Ghuraba al-Sham Front. The latter group had recently been destroyed by Liwa al-Tawhid and ISIS. Seeking revenge, Abu Laith and his new group forged an anti-ISIS alliance with Jabhat al-Akrad, considered very close to the YPG. In March 2014 the Descendants of the Messenger Brigade joined with some other anti-jihadi FSA groups to form the Dawn of Freedom Brigades. The Descendants of the Messenger were initially considered the core group within Dawn of Freedom, but their role was soon eclipsed by the Northern Sun Battalion. Abu Laith was eventually arrested and imprisoned for several crimes during his time in the Ghuraba al-Sham Front, including murder and rape, but a remnant of his brigade continued to participate in most Euphrates Volcano operations.
