Alwiyat al-Majd was a Free Syrian Army unit based in the Eastern Ghouta region outside Damascus. It was formed by defectors from the al-Rahman Legion in October 2015. That month, some civilians in the besieged territory held a demonstration in front of al-Rahman's headquarters, calling for an end to rebel infighting, particularly between al-Rahman and Jaysh al-Islam. Al-Rahman responded by firing into the crowd, killing several demonstrators. Disgusted, some of al-Rahman's fighters formed Alwiyat al-Majd a few days later. In their formation statement, the fighters endorsed the protester's demand to end infighting and called on all rebels to unite to fight the regime. It also denounced "criminal elements" who exploited the people in the name of the revolution. The al-Rahman Legion tolerated the new splinter group's existence for half a year, but in the meantime angry locals had crowded around the building, chanting the names of the people who had been killed in the October incident. Fearing another public relations disaster, and hearing reports of an opportunistic attack on one of their own outposts by Jaysh al-Islam, al-Rahman withdrew. As the fighting between Jaysh al-Islam and the al-Rahman Legion grew worse, Alwiyat al-Majd remained neutral, and Harmouriyah became a relatively calm area of the much-battered Eastern Ghouta.
