The 56th Special Forces Brigade was a Free Syrian Army unit composed primarily of rebels who had been expelled from Deir ez-Zor by the Islamic State. Regrouping in Aleppo, the fighters formed the brigade in early 2015. Despite its small size, the group sent a few dozen fighters to participate in the Euphrates Volcano operations room's liberation of Tal Abyad from IS, as well as the eventual liberation of Raqqa governorate as a whole. The fighters later returned to Deir ez-Zor to help expel the Islamic Emirate of the Levant.
