The 51st Brigade was a Free Syrian Army unit based in Aleppo. It was formed in late 2015, mostly by fighters expelled from Deir ez-Zor by the Islamic State. It also included several Kurds. In 2016 the group became part of the US military's revived Train & Equip Program. Its fighters played a role in negotiations and cooperation between the Euphrates Volcano operations room (which was led in part by the YPG) and non-EV rebels, ultimately staving off a wider rebel-Kurdish war.
