The 5th Corps was an alliance of five Free Syrian Army brigades operating mainly in Idlib governorate, formed in mid-2014. Four of them had been among the first Syrian rebel groups to be vetted and receive TOW anti-tank missiles from the CIA. Due to their relationship with the Americans and their opposition to jihadist ideology, the 5th Corps suffered increasing levels of harassment and eventually outright persecution by the Nusra-run Islamic Emirate of the Levant. With popular support and American funding, the 5th Corps played a major role in wearing down and defeating al-Nusra and its allies in Idlib and western Aleppo over the course of 2015-2018. It was the most prominent faction in Idlib by the end of the war.
